The Fairfield Bay American Legion held their monthly meeting on Monday, October 7. Following the opening ceremonies, two special guests were introduced by Judy Johnson. These two women represented the charities which benefited from the First Annual Fairfield Bay American Legion, Post 333, Golf Tournament in August.
The first recipient was Lisa Evridge, who was the 2012 – 2013 President of the American Legion Auxiliary for the State of AR, and her project is AR Restart for Vets, Inc. Lisa told the Legion members present that this organization helps our veterans without homes, and their families, who have recently received transitional or permanent housing. They provide the furniture, linens, cooking utensils, dishes and other household items to make it a real home. Lisa expressed her gratitude to the members for their most generous donation of $1,500. For anyone wanting to know more about her project, you can visit her website: arrestartforvets.org.
The second recipient was Wanda Honeycutt, who was the 2011 – 2012 President of the American Legion Auxiliary for the State of AR, and her project is the Veterans’ Day Care Center in Little Rock. Like Lisa, Wanda explained to the members how important this is to the veterans who have been able to remain in their home, and their families who are the care givers. This organization gives the care givers a place to bring their veteran whenever they have doctor’s appointments or other obligation, as well as an opportunity for respite care so the care giver can have a few days away. She said this money will help purchase snacks and food, entertainment items for these veterans to use during their stay, as well as replace items that have worn out.
This meeting had its best attendance in many years and we hope to have more programs of interest to the members. Desserts, coffee and tea were served afterward and were enjoyed by all.
