Wed. Oct. 5th – Women in Aviation – “the famous Ninety-Nines”
World Speed Record Holder, Carol Foy
Sterling Scholars Series
1:00pm – 1:45pm presentation
2:00-2:30pm panel discussion
FREE ($10 donation for ALS suggested)
In December 2008, after 18 months of planning, pilots Carol Foy and Carol Ann Garratt set out from Florida’s Orlando International Airport in a small, single engine airplane and flew westbound around the world. Garratt, who flew around the world in 2003 and again in 2008 with Foy, wanted to raise awareness and donations for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). They arrived back in Orlando 8 days, 12 hours and 20 minutes later.
The 2008 flight was certified as the U.S. record by the National Aeronautics Association and as the International Record by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale. Carol’s lecture will not only look at the inspiration and logistics of the trip, but also what it is like to share a small cockpit for 158 hours, leaving the plane only 8 times.
The Event’s Panel
Following her presentation, Carol will join a panel of local female pilots, who will share their stories of piloting their own planes over the last 60 years. Several of the women are members of Amelia Earhart’s organization of female pilots – the Ninety-Nines. Marie Cronin (resident of FFB) and a member of the 99s will be on the panel as well as sport pilots Beth Robinson from Holley Mountain Air Park, Dr. Jeanie Stone local optometrist, and Major Kenda Garrett, a USAF C-130 instructor pilot from Little Rock Air Force Base.
Learn More About the famous Ninety-Nines:
The Ninety-Nines is the international organization of women pilots that promotes advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honoring our unique history and sharing our passion for flight.
Established in 1929 when Amelia announced an organizational meeting of female pilots at her home in NY – 99 women attended. September was welcomed at the Education Center with some activities designed to encourage self-reflection and wellbeing. Dr. Stanley Lombardo was our Sterling Scholars speaker for the month and was well prepared to share poetry and creative writing techniques with our students. Our Health and Wellness Thursdays featured registered dietitian Monica Hunt’s Diabetes Education presentation on Carbohydrate Counting. Monica covered the essentials of managing this disease through a healthy, low carb diet.
Returning to our Health and Wellness Thursdays will be Tammy Smith with the Alzheimer’s Association presentations. In addition, we will bring back Donna Johnson for her Saturday classes on Wilton Cake Decorating. The students in Jim Tindall’s weekly painting class continue to apply his principals of composition, color and value to their artwork.
Fused glass instructor Barbara Cornett was awarded several blue ribbons at the Faulkner County Fair and now her stained glass entries will move up to the state level. The Education Center will showcase the winning entries from our students and instructors at the county and state fairs with our annual Blue Ribbon Beauties exhibit starting on October 27th.
I have been researching the Oral History of Veterans Project of the National Archives. This program enlists volunteers in the community to interview and record conversations with our military veterans which are then submitted to the Library of Congress for inclusion in the archives of the American Folklore Center.
Their brochure states, “There are over 20 million veterans in America today, but with over 1,100 war veterans dying each day, there is an urgent need to collect their personal accounts of their war time experiences while they are still among us. There are valuable lessons to be learned and these should be collected by the nation’s library. You can help create this historical record by contributing a story of interviewing someone yourself. Learn how to capture the oral history of a veteran in your family or community”. Mayor Wellenburger believes that Fairfield Bay has a great number of residents with untold stories from their war time service and would like the Education Center to play a key role in guiding volunteer interviewers to collect them. More information about this project will be available in November during the Veteran’s Day observation.

Wednesday, November 2 – Arkansas Master Naturalist Tom Nowlin
Clinton resident and Arkansas Master Naturalist Tom Nowlin will discuss how the Master Naturalists Organization supports the natural areas in our communities through volunteering with building and maintaining trails, leading interpretive hikes and talks, and restoring and maintaining wildlife habitats and observation areas. Striving to strengthen their partnership with Fairfield Bay, they welcome new members into the Naturalists In Training program, a 40 hour course of approved training on Saturdays starting in January 2017 and continuing through early May. These classes are comprised of classroom lecture and field explorations lead by Master Naturalists with expertise in areas of biology, botany, geology, herpetology, and astronomy. The first scheduled class at our Education Center is in February 2017 with a presentation on ornithology and a guided tour of the eagle nests on Greer’s Ferry lake.
Our regular classes continue to draw in both residents and resort visitors, and we have added new classes to the schedule. Please visit our facebook page: FFB Community Education Center for our weekly class schedule, or call us at 501-884-4440.
