Little Red River Audubon Society
The Little Red River Audubon Society has begun rebuilding itself in the last year and needs your help to complete this mission.
A little history. It was formed many, many years ago by a group of nature lovers. There was a very active group of members who came to meetings to learn about all kinds of things related to birds, nature, topography, throng trees to name a few. Fields trip galore to see the Elk in the Boxley Valley, Heifer International Project, Eagle watch, birding in Wildlife Management Areas.
Those members also ran an essay contest to send local school kids to the Halberg Ecology Camp, started the annual Creature Feature and sold bird seed twice yearly to raise funds to send these kids to camp.
Sadly, over the years membership declined as the original group got older, moved away or could no longer participate in the running of the organization. The onus then fell on just a few folks who kept things humming along but wanted to have more membership involvement. Lots of folks were willing to enjoy the programs and events but not the running of it.
For a few years the group concentrated on the main focus which was the kids. We continued the essay contest, the Creature Feature and the Great Backyard Birdseed sale and sent at least one child to camp every year but one.
This year we sent Emma Callahan to Junior camp on a paid scholarship thanks to your purchase of birdseed.
Last year we also sent Echo Mitchell to camp and were notified that she was invited back to camp this year. We had nothing to do with that at all. it was all on Echo and her enthusiasm during her time at camp last year. The instructors decide who gets invited to the next level camp. We have our fingers crossed that she did it again because we know she enjoyed it and might get invited to senior camp which has a smaller number of campers. Well done both of them.
Fast forward to this year. We now have a new President who is an avid birder and her mission is to rebuild the group one member at a time. Her name is Edie Calaway. She was very involved with the Little Rock group Audubon Arkansas.
We held a membership drive and need to run another one later in the year when folks are back from travelling around the country. The Creature Feature event took place in June and was to put it literally, was an overwhelming event due to the power of Facebook. We had 62 participants last year and over 200 this year. The group was not quite ready for that kind of participation but we love it. Plans will begin soon for another Backyard Birdseed sale in the Fall. A couple of field trips were planned in the beginning of the year and we will plan more once the weather cools.
Our membership dues are only $15 per year and if you would like to join us contact us via [email protected]
