The Bay’s notorious King of the Skeptics, The Great Scoffer, and Pooh-pooher of Everything that Floats down the River, our own town crank, the Great Know-It-All, Grand Geezer Eldridge Smedley, has just published his latest pamphlet lambasting our society’s current surrender to what he characterizes as unfiltered hogwash and poisonous barnyard droppings.
Out of Bounds has obtained a copy of Smedley’s latest diatribe and, as a public service, is reproducing his pithy comments forthwith. (Editors’ note: Be warned that some of Smedley’s statements might be offensive to the more liberal and tender-hearted readers.)
Smedley writes: “What our society does not need by any stretch of common sense and decency is for another mind altering, cancer-causing substance to be made available legally much like beer, wine, and booze is today. Alcoholic beverages are on shelves everywhere wooing users to come, taste, buy, and consume. You can have it delivered to your home. You can buy it like a Big Mac at the drive-thru window.
And here is what booze brings to the party: it helps people relax; it makes food taste better; you get to laugh and sing songs with your buddies in a noisy bar; it allows you dance with another guy’s wife; it works to loosen up your inhibitions allowing for you to look and act more stupid than usual. Booze is also the primary cause for drunk driving which can and does cause untold misery and death. It is often the precipitating element in domestic abuse. It is estimated that 80% of criminal acts are committed by people under the influence of alcohol! In addition, the chronic use of alcohol shortens a person’s life span by years as it induces early heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. (Ever hear about cancer of the esophagus, a cancer common to alcoholics?) But never mind these “issues,” you’re enjoying you and all that other stuff happens to other people but not to you! And while we are at it, let’s put another drug on top of the pile of available mind-altering, feel good drugs and let more good times roll!
We’re talking MARIJUANA that is now being promoted as another wonderful drug for human enjoyment but this one, marijuana, is more wonderful(!) than alcohol because it does not have any deleterious side or aftereffects. Smoke it or ingest it, get high, and wake up refreshed good to go! No addictive pull, no hangover, no lingering dullness, no need for a morning hit to feel good. All too good to be true? Hitler’s Big Lie is a mere fib compared to the banana oil being broadcasted daily about the “benefits” of this “most benign and pleasant drug.” The “smoke” coming from the marijuana advocates, if believed, will cause many young people to forfeit their opportunity to live wholesome lives! Does our society really need another dangerous substance added to its huge rotten pile of destructive, “voter approved” substances, and worse – one that is especially toxic to our most vulnerable citizens – our youth an young adults!
THE BIG LIE EXPOSED! Here is a summary of what marijuana is really offering the youth and young adults of our nation as reported (Arkansas Dem-Gazette, July 6, 2014) by Dr. David Sack, Chief executive of Elements Behavioral Health, a network of mental health and addiction centers that includes adolescent and young adult rehab programs:
1. Marijuana damages developing brains.
2. Marijuana is linked to mental health problems.
3. Marijuana sets up kids for failure.
Dr. Sacks’ article should be read in full to gain a deeper understanding that marijuana is a very dangerous drug and no more so than to our precious teenagers and young adults. Legalizing this destructive drug is to condemn one generation after another to lives of stupor, addiction, lung cancer, and unfulfilled futures. Does our nation really need more “potheads” added to our already overwhelming number of meth addicts, alcoholics, and other drug-wasted people?
If marijuana is beneficial as a medicine, let it be available under the same protocol as morphine and other opiates. No argument here, but why the push to declare another brain-mushing substance as “recreational,” making this mind poison more readily available to the curious, experimental-prone, and the uninformed young to their peril!
“Stoner,” please explain when and where in all of human history that people have been advantaged by the wide use of mind-altering drugs? Was man not given a brain to use for his well-being, to solve problems, to organize his thoughts, to enjoy all things of creativity and beauty, and all this only requiring a sober and rational condition? Why do you think that by getting high, or plastered, or “stoned” works better than a clear head? Are you not aware of all the monumental problems creating havoc and misery that is brought on by drug use, be it alcohol, cocaine, meth, AND MARIJUANA?
Smedley ends: “Thanks a lot, mister marijuana advocate, for promoting this “harmless’ drug. Our nation’s hospitals, rehab centers, and funeral parlors also thank you for all additional business coming their way.”
