Lions International

July 9, 2013 By Dan Feuer

Jim & Phyllis Wilkins

What do the Aland Islands, the Principality of Andorra and the Kingdom of Tonga have in common other than being places we have no idea where they are? All are countries or geographic locations where one of the 46,000 Lions Clubs are located around the world. Just three years after the Lions Club was founded by Melvin Jones a 38 year old Chicago business leader the Lions went international when we established a club in Canada. Mexico followed in 1927 and during the 1950’s and 1960’s international growth accelerated with new clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa. The ideal of an international organization is exemplified by our enduring relationship with the United Nations. Lions Clubs International were one of the first nongovernmental organizations invited to assist in the drafting of the United Nations Charter and have supported the work of the UN ever since. Whether its International Relations Programs, Community and Environmental Programs, Health Programs or Disaster Relief you can be sure there is one of the 1.35 million Lions from some 207 countries and geographic locations around the globe ready to support our motto of “We Serve”. The Aland Islands by the way is an autonomous, Swedish speaking region of Finland lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea (your on your own for the other two).

The Fairfield Bay Lions will next gather on Thursday July 11 with dinner being served at 5:30 p.m. and our meeting with featured speaker Penny Stringer the Van Buren County Coordinator for the Senior Aging program starting at 6 pm.

BINGO is held each Monday evening at the Lions Den with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the first game called at 7 p.m. Join us for All U Can Eat Pancakes or Gravy & Biscuits both served with sausage and coffee or milk for only $5 for adults, $3 for youth 6 – 12 and children 5 and under with paying adult are free. Breakfast is served each Tuesday and Saturday morning from 7:30 – 10 am. The Lions Den on Dave Creek Parkway is also host for the Mark McCord family entertainment show each Tuesday from 7 – 9 pm with tickets available at the door.
