Leading The Way

July 23, 2013 By Dan Feuer

Founded by three Detroit area Lions Clubs members in 1939, Leader Dogs for the Blind provides guide dogs to people who are blind and visually impaired to enhance their mobility, independence and quality of life (www.leaderdog.org). Thanks to donations, the guide dog services are provided free of charge, including room and board and travel for clients living in North America. Leading the way last year, Lion Mark Mansell, rode his bicycle from Portland, OR to Portland ME and raised over $100,000 for the Leader Dog program. This summer Lion Mark and his wife, Lion Debbie, covered some 10,000 miles and 48 states in 24 days to increase awareness for the Leader Dog program and raised another $30,000. If you would like to add to this total, donations can be made at the Leader Dogs for the Blind website listed above, and remember, if you ain’t the lead dog the view never changes.

Pancake breakfasts are held at the Lions Den on Dave Creek Parkway each Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 7:30–10 a.m. BINGO is held each Monday evening with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the first game beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday evenings from 7 –9 p.m. the Lions Den is the location for the Mark McCord Tribute Show, featuring Branson style entertainment. Our next regular meeting will be Thursday July 25 with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and our meeting and featured speaker, Bob and Wilba Thompson with an update on Our Towne Conference and Visitors Center.
