Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.)
Prissy is a registered therapy dog with Pet Partners, a national leader in training and certifying animals for use in hospitals, schools, and libraries. She has been specially trained to work with struggling young readers to encourage their emergent literacy skills. Dr. Catherine Swift earned her doctorate of education by conducting a national study of the Reading Education Assistance Dog program, and has published her dissertation on this topic. Dr. Swift has also trained and certified her horse, Porsche, as a therapy provider with Pet Partners.
John D is a Search and Rescue dog, human cancer detective and all-around humanitarian. When needed, John D is called in to find the missing in kidnappings, disasters, drownings and other emergencies. He also works to save lives by using his remarkable scenting ability to advance the use of canines in detecting ovarian cancer and other cancers at UAMS, which may help save a mother, daughter or sister from a devastating disease. Because of this John D was recognized by the American Humane Association as the 2013 National Search and Rescue Hero Dog.
