The Fairfield Bay United Methodist Church welcomed their new choir director, David Hoffman, in October. David came to us from St Joseph, Missouri. He got his Vocal Music degree from Northwest Missouri State University and retired from the Army. During his time in the service, he traveled extensively and directed church choirs in Indiana, Georgia and Germany. Additionally, he performed with the Indianapolis Symphonic Chorus, Dallas Symphonic Chorus, the Washington National Cathedral Choir and the St Joseph Community Chorus.
David is preparing the choir to perform the annual Christmas Program to be held Sunday, December 8 at 3 p.m. and Monday, December 9 at 7 p.m. It is always a highlight for our church and more importantly, the opportunity to celebrate Jesus’ birth. They will perform the “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.” The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first held at the Church of England on Christmas Eve, 1918. It has been performed in England every year, with the exception of 1930 and broadcast on BBC. The pattern and strength of the service is derived from the lessons and not the music alone. The main theme is the development of the loving purposes of God … seen ‘through the windows and the words of the Bible.’
The choir will combine several anthem pieces with scripture and congregational singing of Christmas hymns and Makala Strang will sing “Mary, Did You Know.” We are confident that the service will be a blessing to the congregation.
