Shirley senior guard Mariana Larson scored 15 points in her final home game, but it wasn’t nearly enough as Calico Rock cruised to a 54-28 win over the Lady Blue Devils on Friday night at Glenn Hackett Fieldhouse.
The Lady Pirates (13-17) jumped out to a 13-4 first quarter lead, which grew to 26-9 by halftime. Calico Rock outscored Shirley 20-5 in the third quarter to place the mercy-rule into effect in the final period.
Megan Hiles compiled her game-high 20 points in only three quarters of play for Calico Rock. Karlee Killian connected from beyond the arch three times on her way to 13 points and Suzie McGowan chipped in seven.
Following Larson’s 15 points, Katlin Gibbons and Jordan Burgess each had four, while Makala Strang and Angelica Abyon each contributed two for Shirley, which opened district tournament play versus Timbo on Monday in Greers Ferry. The winner faced Midland on Tuesday. Should the Lady Blue Devils advance to the semifinals they would face second-seeded
Concord in the semifinals set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Shirley bid farewell to seniors Larson, Gibbons, Strang, Abyon and Ally Graddy, who brought the crowd to their feet when it was announced that she recently defeated Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – a form of cancer.
