History of St. Joseph’s Orphanage by: Thelma Edwards Poole on July 18, 2014. Standing four stories tall on the crest of a hill on the edge of North Little Rock, St. Joseph’s Home commands a majestic presence on an idyllic 63 acre farm with panoramic views of the Metropolitan area of Little Rock. This historic landmark was built by the Catholic diocese of Little Rock under the directive of Bishop John Baptist Morris, and was designed in an Italian-villa style by renowned architect Charles L. Thompson. On completion in 1910, it served as an orphanage for over 60 years providing refuge for thousands of children of all denominations, ethnic backgrounds and social circumstances, and also for elderly in need of care. The St. Joseph’s Home is listed on the national Register of Historic Places (1976). The building is currently being used for multiple functions and is available for meetings/events, retreats, classroom, and office space. Other Information can be found at: Facebook.com/sjcark
