Dealing With Alzheimer’s At Christmas

Is the holiday season a stressful time for you? Imagine how much more stressful it must be for those who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease? How stressful would it be if you did not recognize all those extra people who seem to want to make conversation with you? How stressful would it be if you did not understand why you were frequently urged to change clothes and to go out into crowds or eat unusually large meals?

Holidays are stressful for persons with dementia – and their caregivers. The stress on patients can be alleviated to some extent by disrupting the usual r’outine as little as possible and by limiting noise and exposure to crowds. The caregiver can find some relief by sharing their concerns with others who understand. A support group for caregivers of persons suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s will meet at Indian Rock Village on Wednesday, December 18, at 2 p.m. Call 884-6728 for details.
