Senior Night was not so joyous for the West Side senior boys, who were out-gunned down the stretch by a talent-laden Abundant Life squad, 76-59. With West Side post, Joe Paul Freeland, nursing an injury, Abundant Life forward, Blaine Barnett, used his size and athleticism to rack up a game-high 24 points in the win.
West Side seniors, Randon Carlton and Gage Hewitt, scored 21 points apiece to keep the Eagles in the game until the fourth quarter. Barnett led the Owls on a 13-4 run to end the game.
Trent Bentley (5), Austin Watters (4), Hayden Moore (3), Dawson Gardner (3) and Ben Smith (2) rounded out the scoring for West Side, which falls to 18-12, 6-6 on the season.
Eagles coach, Shane Davis, lamented his team’s effort on the defensive end.
“I thought offensively, we did fine,” Davis said. “But I told our guys if we don’t have more of a sense of urgency on defense next Tuesday, we won’t be advancing in the postseason.”
The Eagles will open district tournament play at home on Tuesday against the Midland-Rural Special winner. Tipoff is set for 5:15 p.m.
