Community Education Center Announces New Series
Your Community Education Center is proud to host the 2nd Sterling Scholars Series Lecture – Origins of Heraldry, Family Crests and Coat of Arms by Dr. Lombardo on Wednesday, August 5th at 1pm. Dr. Lombardo has been known to share his vast knowledge of metallurgy and skill at sword making with groups while displaying his very own suit of armor. We will have on hand his books – Paxton at Bosworth Field – three novels that take the hero from the 1800’s West to the English court of King Richard III.
For some historical figures quality of life was relative to the times they were living in. The March 2015 issue of Smithsonian magazine featured a brief article on the demise of Richard III, the much maligned King of England, the last of the House of York regents (1485), and the discovery of his remains beneath a parking lot in Leicester, England. Poor Richard did not enjoy a balanced life – the “hunchback king” had idiopathic scoliosis, bad teeth, and parasitic roundworms. Accused of the imprisonment and disappearance of his young nephews (heirs to the throne that he desired), Richard was not well reflected in the works of Shakespeare and other historical accounts. The best thing that can be said about him is that his death in the Battle of Bosworth Field ended the War of the Roses, the civil war between the Houses of Lancaster and York that raged across England in the latter half of the 15th century.
But what if things had been different? What if Dickon had better balance in his life? What if he had an astute advisor with superpowers who could provide strategic insight for battle field tactics? So goes the storyline for the Paxton series of historical adventures written by Dr. Stanley Lombardo, who earned a Ph. D. in medieval studies and currently teaches screenwriting, technical writing, British literature, film studies, science fiction, applied linguistics and English as a second language at Arkansas Technical University.
It might be a bit too late for Richard III to attempt to balance his life – but what about you?
